Huatulco is the Perfect Spring Destination!
Huatulco is the perfect spring and summer destination for travellers looking to enjoy both the beautiful weather and natural environment of Huatulco, Mexico. There was recently a great article on Pique News Magazine that talked about Huatulco as being an amazing and emerging vacation destination within Mexico. The author tells a touching recount of his family’s reasons to visit there, but beyond their reasons the nostalgic and ecotourism aspects of Huatulco can appeal to anyone looking for a tropical vacation this spring or summer season.
Some interesting facts that were included in the article highlight Huatulco’s amazing ecotourism and natural “green” travel industry, including the fact that all of Huatulco and the surrounding areas operate on 100% renewable energy. Here’s a couple of paragraphs from the article:
“We get all our energy from the wind,” says local tourism consultant Jose Antonia Islas. His pride in the program is evident. “It’s produced in nearby Salina Cruz, you know, at the point where Mexico is at its narrowest between Atlantic and Pacific coasts.” “They say it’s the second best place in the world for wind turbines,” he continues. “Very consistent from month to month. It’s a big part of our ‘Green Globe’ certification, vous savez.”
Senor Islas is just as proud of the local water treatment program. “All the irrigation here is done with grey water,” he says. “As far as pollutants - nothing goes back into the ocean.” He smiles, if only a little self-consciously. “And that’s a huge step up from past resort developments in this country.”
Pretty amazing stuff! The article then goes on to describe the high expectations for Huatulco as an emerging vacation destination in Mexico as the government has outlined several initiatives, including the completion of a major highway to make Huatulco more accessible, over the next 10 years or so. However, all the growth plans were sidetracked due to the slowing economy in combination with the SARS epidemic outbreak that really hurt not only Huatulco, but all of Mexico as being one of the premiere vacation destinations.
However, the rapid growth may not have been the best thing for Huatulco, so all in all things appear to be for the best for this continuously emerging vacation destination.
He cites beautiful Huatulco National Park, a 6,500-hectare chunk of still-wild coastal jungle cut out of the heart of the proposed development in 1997, as a prime example of a serendipitous consequence to a slowing economy. “Would they have created the park if their plan had really taken off? I don’t think so. But now it’s there. In perpetuity. And it provides a great natural legacy for the region.”
So as you can see, in the end the government’s plans for Huatulco worked out in the end as the city was still able to develop without impacting the environment negatively. If anything it’s actually the opposite as Huatulco has benefited from the slow but steady growth as evidenced by the amazing natural park as well as the way the locals have used the land, and especially the winds, to create renewable energy instead of devastating the environment like so many other tropical destinations do unfortunately.

For those who have been to this region before, you already understand the unique elements it offers travelers. For those who have heard about it from a friend or travel agent - you won’t believe the experience until you’re down there yourself.
After having been in Cancun, the Mayan Riviera, Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, etc…it seemed as though a Mexican style vacation was a pretty ’standard’ experience…until Huatulco travel came along. This area brings a totally different element into the mix. It offers an authentically cultural experience and a natural and ecological paradise. To see a pristine, untouched beach with a jungle backdrop, white sand and turquoise water without a building , boat or person in site is something not many people would forget…and all this within a 20 minute boat ride from the main marina.
So - how do you plan for the best experience in the area? The seemingly easiest thing to do is to go online and book a package that includes airfare, accommodations, airport transport and an all inclusive food and beverage package. Well, it does offer a single touch-point for planning but it would be argued that this is far from the best and/or most economical way to experience Huatulco!
With breathtaking one-bedroom villas starting at $900 USD a week that can accommodate up to 2 adults and 2 children with access to a private cook and dedicated staff - why would you want to battle the crowds at a resort? Dining menus, beverage service - all at your beck and call with the menu being your own grocery list! Even adding your airfare onto the cost - you are still well below package prices and will likely have a much more private, lavish and memorable experience.
